Book Review- J.A. Jance- Breach of Duty

J.A. Jance- Breach of Duty (Avon Books 2000) 3.75 Stars

Beau’s partner Sue is a single parent who is struggling to raise two young boys, but she cannot let it distract her from the latest case. An elderly lady has been killed during arson, and a fridge full of money has been found in her garage. Meanwhile mysterious bones seem to be leading to death.

It took me quite some time to truly get into this book. The book was very character driven, which is good, but in this book’s case it was a little much. About halfway through the book redeemed itself. The plot began to thicken and the action started to flow. It was an action-packed ending that really was loaded. I do wish that the author would have made the book more interesting earlier on. The ending did redeem the slowness, and the characters were certainly some of the best I have seen in a long time.

Book Review- H.G. Wells- War of the Worlds

H.G. Wells- War of the Worlds (Moby Books1983) 4 Stars

Martians have come to earth. A timeless classic, so I really do not need to explain the book. I loved this book when I read it as a kid and I loved it this time when I read it. I do not normally like science fiction, but this one is a must read. I love the main character and how he is struggling to cope with everything that is going on, yet he does not ever give up hope, even though he comes close to brink at several points. I thought it was interesting how Wells starts the whole alien fad, and yet no one else has really come anywhere close to his description of an alien. I also found the end rather interesting in how he has everything turn out. Wells was a fantastic author with a lot of skill and I definitely recommend reading this classic.

Book Review- Dan Mahoney- The Two Chinatowns

Dan Mahoney- The Two Chinatowns (St. Martin’s Press 2002) 3.75 Stars

The Triads are moving into Toronto and have already established themselves in New York City. Now Detective Cisco Sanchez is in Toronto and his fiancé has just been murdered while they were out for supper. The killers were gathering extortion money for the Triads and Cisco takes exception to there freedom after the murder. It has become his mission, and the joint forces mission of the Toronto PD, New York PD, and the FBI to take them down. Danger is around every corner as they hunt down and cripple the Triads. Every move could be their last.

The introduction was good, I love reading about boxing, so it grabbed my attention, then with the murder following close behind it sucked me into the pages. Cisco is not an overly likable character, but one who is quite capable. He is teamed up with other characters that are also quite well done by this author. The plot was an interesting one, though at times I felt my attention waning. It was also interesting to see Canada playing a major role in a book by an American author. I enjoyed how the book brought the characters to many different countries and the challenges that this involved. I would recommend this book/series to thriller lovers.

Book Review- John Vornholt- Crossfire

John Vornholt- Crossfire (Pocket Books 1996) 1.5 Stars

Geordi LaForge is a roadie for the Starfleet band and Will Riker is looking to get in for his trombone playing. Geordi uses a phase modulator to add that special something to the band’s music and with the competition on Pacifica coming up they are going to need everyone playing perfectly. Meanwhile Riker is not impressed by the pranks he is getting from the older band members. After the competition they are captured are forced to play on a war-torn planet or be killed. Now they find themselves in a fight for their lives as two forces duke it out.

I really did not enjoy this book and am not sure why I even bothered finishing it. It had a good plot, once it got to it, which took more than half the book. The characters of will and Geordi were decent, but not great, and no one else had any kind of depth. Mostly I found this book to be fairly boring, even in the action parts it was ridiculous just how boring it was. I would not recommend this book to anyone, and that is all I really have to say about this book.

Book Review- Joseph A. West- The Reckless Gun

Joseph A. West- The Reckless Gun (Signet Books 2006) 4 Stars

A fortune teller has predicted blood being spilled in the town of Dodge, which means trouble for Marshal Matt Dillon. One-armed Tom Gillespie has just shot a rich rancher, declaring it as revenge for the man killing his father during the Civil War and stealing thirty thousand dollars of gold. Now his partner in crime and business is declaring war on the town of Dodge until Matt Dillon hands over Tom Gillespie for a lynching. Matt Dillon won’t be pushed, but he is going to fight to keep his prisoner.

I have not enjoyed a western as much as I did this one, in a really long time. The introduction lures the reader in and makes them want to find out just what is going to happen next. It was interesting to read a book about a series I loved watching years ago. The characters were well done and stuck pretty close to the TV series characters. The plot was pretty good, not always realistic, but fun to read. By western standards this book was also fairly unpredictable; which means that it wasn’t completely unpredictable, but it had its moments that caught you by surprise. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good western.

Book Review- Stephen Hunter- Night of Thunder

Stephen Hunter- Night of Thunder (Pocket Star Books 2009) 3.75 Stars

NASCAR is coming to Britsol, but reporter Nikki Swagger is not interested in NASCAR, she is hunting down a lead on a meth lab. She is following up on the lead when she is run off of the road, in an attempt to kill her. She is now in the hospital. Not sure when she will awake from her coma, Bob Lee Swagger is digging into just who may have wanted his daughter dead. He won’t stop until he brings the guilty to justice, even if it means they must die.

The introduction for this book was pretty good; it makes you want to find out just why it is Nikki was targeted. We get to see a little of the bad guys throughout the book, but not enough to spoil things, or give away who the head honcho is. The timing and location is interesting as my wife loves NASCAR, so having it in Bristol during a NASCAR race made it grab my attention. Hunter is great at writing setting, although at times I think it was a little too much. I also loved how much depth his characters had, but again at times it was too much and took away from the pace. The plot was great. I really enjoyed how it moved along so smoothly and then ended with a pop! I also loved how the ending was so unpredictable. I did not see it coming, although after I was like, “How did I not see that one coming?” I did find that his long paragraphs were a little distracting, and at times I felt that he got a little too wordy. Overall though, it was a pretty good book and I would recommend it to thriller fans.

Book Review- Phyllis Reynolds Naylor- Shiloh Season

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor- Shiloh Season (Aladdin Paperbacks 1998) 3.25 Stars

Marty Preston now has Shiloh as his pet. He is still working for Doc Murphy to pay off his vet pill, but as the new hunting season approaches and Judd is drinking heavily, he is afraid that something might happen to Shiloh. Will Judd try to hurt Shiloh, or maybe even kill him? Will Marty have to tell the secret he has been hiding?

This book got off to a slow start, and never really picked up. It does grab the reader about half way through and you get caught up in Marty’s fears and his effort to correct them. Marty is a wonderful character with a great heart. I like how we saw the characters in the book get more depth and Naylor filled them out. I think that young kids and pet lovers will easily get lost in this book and would find it a challenge to put down. I do wish that the plot could have been a little deeper, although I am not sure how that could have been accomplished.

Book Review- C.J. Box- Open Season

C.J. Box- Open Season (Berkley Mystery 2002) 2.75 Stars

In Wyoming, Joe Pickett is a Game Warden. Someone has just been found dead on his property with a cooler containing nothing but a few animal droppings. Rumours are flying about a species thought to be extinct showing up and an oil company wants to build pipes through the area. Meanwhile Joe Pickett’s family may be in danger. Can Joe Pickett figure out what is going on before it is too late?

I loved the introductory chapter in this novel, it kind of made you see a little into the life of a Game Warden and through in a little action. However, it got to be pretty tedious for a long time after that. I found myself bored until the last 80 pages, when it got to be intense and action packed. The author throws in a lot of useless details/fluff that could have easily been eliminated, which would have picked up the pace of the novel and made it more interesting. The ending was cute, and fit in well, not sure about realistic, but it was a heart-warming end.

Book Review- Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- No Place to Cry

Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- No Place to Cry: The Hurt and Healing of Sexual Abuse (The Moody Bible Institute 1990) 3.5 Stars

We now see Dorie years after her first book and she is now discussing her sexual abuse, which she did not feel comfortable discussing in the first book. She has been searching for healing and the Lord is providing what she needs. Now she is trying to help others find healing in the same manner.

I found this book particularly hard to read. It was challenging to read about all the abuse she underwent, as well as the abuse others have undergone. It could have been a little better written, but it was truly written from the heart. It is amazing what the Lord has done in her life and how he is using her to help others. It is a very religious book, so if you are not into religious then this may not be good for you. However if you have been abused and are in need of healing this is likely a good read.

Book Review- Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved

Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved (The Moody Bible Institute 1979) 3 Stars

Dorie’s mother did not want her, as it forced her into an early marriage. The emotional abuse was terrible and she was quickly sent to an orphanage. From there she was sent from one abusive home to another. When a group of Christians held a Bible study at the orphanage, she found the Lord and is now living a life of struggling between forgiveness and bitterness.

I loved the first section of this book. The author pours her heart out onto the pages. The story was captivating and my heart went out to her. I enjoyed seeing how she embraced religion and used it to keep her sanity throughout her trials. Once the first half of the book was over though, it became more about her religious life and it was kind of tedious. I found that it kind of dragged at many sections. I would only recommend this book if you enjoy deeply religious books.
