Book Review- Tim Cockey- The Hearse Case Scenario

Tim Cockey- The Hearse Case Scenario (2002) 1.75 Stars

Hitchcock Sewell is doing his job as an undertaker, making arrangements for a funeral, when he receives the strangest phone call. Shrimp Martin, a local bar owner, calls to tell Sewell that he has been shot by his girlfriend, a close friend of Sewell’s. Shrimp is brought to the hospital and ends up getting murdered while staying there. Now his friend is wanted for murder and he must try to find evidence that she did not do it. He doesn’t realize how dangerous this mission might be.

The introduction for this book was pretty good; it made me want to read more. However it kind of tapered off and got to be kind of tedious. The overall plot was actually decent, but the copious amounts of fluff detracted from the level of intrigue. It had some good twists, but the ending kind of wrapped things up too neatly. I did enjoy the sarcasm of the characters, they made me chuckle. The characters themselves were decent, but could have been tweaked and given more background to make them deeper. Overall, the book was not one that I would recommend.

Book Review- Paul Levine- Solomon vs Lord

Paul Levine- Solomon vs Lord (Bantam Books 2005) 3.5 Stars

Steve Solomon is a wily lawyer whose tricks are well known in the courtroom. Victoria Lord is a rookie lawyer with something to prove and a stickler for the rules. After getting her fired, he will partner with her for a high profile murder trial. It will be a balance of sticking to the law and playing with the law, which could either work out great, or land them both in a cell.

The beginning of this book was an interesting way to start and prepared me for a very amusing read. It did take a while to get to the point and lacked focus. It was an okay plot though and made for a good read. It was not the most realistic of books, but made up for with great characters and a lot of laugh out loud scenes. I do not know if I have laughed so much with a book in quite a while. One thing I did not like was all the sexual parts, but some of these were kind of funny as well. Overall this book was a good one time read and I would be interested in reading more by this author.

Book Review- Raymond Khoury- The Last Templar

Raymond Khoury- The Last Templar (Signet Books 2006) 3.5 Stars

In 1291 the Templars are being hunted down and are struggling to hide a chest filled with secrets that could change the world. Now in Manhattan a museum is robbed of their Templar Knights display. Murders are now ripping through New York, all connected to the museum robbery. An archaeologist and FBI agent are teaming up to solve this case before it is too late.

***SPOILER ALERT***

The book was well written, with an introduction that grabs your attention right off the bat. The plot was also very good with some great twists and turns along the way. The setting was interesting, and he merged the time period shifting very well. I also had some things that I found to be fundamentally wrong with the book. The author had his characters bashing religion as a whole a lot, which I found to be frustrating, although he kind of made up for it in the end. I do not like to see any religion being insulted. The main character, Reilly, was very easily shaken from his faith, which was also kind of frustrating. Tess, the other main character, is also so willing to believe the scroll she finds is authentic and accurate, and yet she has less proof of its validity then anyone else has in their religions. I also found it hard to fathom how Reilly can so easily forgive Tess when she betrays his trust so often, which doesn’t seem very realistic.

Book Review- Carl Hiaasen- Nature Girl

Carl Hiaasen- Nature Girl (Grand Central Publishing 2007) 2.5 Stars

Honey Santana is tired of receiving telemarketing calls during the supper hour. For revenge she tricks the telemarketer into coming for an all expenses paid ecotour of the Everglades. A Seminole who had a tourist die on him, is hiding out in the Everglades. What will happen when these people all meet, stuck on the same island?

I was a little bored with this book. The intro was not gripping and the rest of the book was not overly interesting. It was meant to be witty, and it succeeded in some parts, but in many parts the humour was pretty dry. The plot was a little weak and there were too many story lines going on all at once, which was kind of annoying. The characters were well done, which a redeeming quality for this book. Overall I would not recommend this book
