Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Drop

Michael Connelly- The Drop 4.75 Stars

Detective Harry Bosch has just been given his DROP date, 3 years until he must retire from the force. He has two investigations going on at once, one is a cold case from 1989 and one is a live case involving the city Councilman, Irvin Irving. The cold case involves blood found one a body of a woman raped and murdered in 1989, but the blood is that of an eight-year-old, which means that he must get to the bottom of things. The live case is a possible suicide/murder of Councilman Irvin Irving’s son. Just the kind of case Harry Bosch dreads, high jingo/politics.

I loved this book from start to finish. It starts out grabbing your attention and getting you involved in the case, not letting up at any point. I found myself curious about how it is going to turn out at every chapter. It had many twists and turns with little surprises here and there. It was very hard to set this book down, as it had me on the edge of my seat. The characters are always great and bring extra depth to the novel. I also enjoyed the reference to Castle, considering his appearances on the TV series. Overall it is definitely one I would highly recommend. One of my favourites by this author.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Fifth Witness

Michael Connelly- The Fifth Witness 5 Stars

Mickey Haller has no criminal law clients left, now he must rely on foreclosure defence to support his office. Running his business from the back of his Lincoln, Haller has just about given up on criminal law. Now one of his clients has been accused of killing the man responsible for foreclosing on her home and he has been hired to get her set free. Mickey Haller is back as he attempts to get Lisa Trammel off of her possible life sentence.

I loved this book. The Fifth Witness is one of Connelly’s best books yet. With an introduction that gives you the impression that Mickey Haller is finished, I was captivated by the well written tale of Mickey Haller’s return. The plot was really well done, with great twists and turns; you just never knew what to expect next. It also had a surprise ending that you will never see coming. The characters were expertly crafted and seemed to jump off of every page. I really did love the ending it was a great way to conclude things. Overall I would certainly slap my recommendation on this book, a great addition to the Mickey Haller series.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Reversal

Michael Connelly- The Reversal (Vision Books 2011) 4.25 Stars

Mickey Haller has been handed a case, only this time it is not on the defence side, it’s on the side of the prosecution. He has been asked to be an independent prosecutor, to keep things away from the DA’s office. He has only agreed to take the case as he truly believes that the man is guilty. Jessup has just been released from prison after DNA evidence has overturned his sentence in the murder of a young girl. Now the DA’s office wants him retried and they cannot be the ones in the driver’s seat. Mickey Haller has agreed as long as he can use his ex-wife Maggie and investigator Harry Bosch. Little does he realise just how dangerous things can get.

This one had a little bit of a slower start, but it was interesting to see Haller being presented with a case out of the norm for him. I love how Connelly brings in characters from his other series’ as it is always great to get an update on how they are doing and what they are up to. Connelly does such a great job with all of his characters. They are so full of depth and show emotion like I could imagine they would in real life. I love seeing Haller at work in the courtroom, even though I don’t normally like courtroom books. The plot was also pretty good and flowed smoothly. It had some good twists, but was not completely unpredictable. I must also say that I loved the ending, as it was not your average conclusion. Overall I enjoyed this book and thought it was a good instalment in both the Lincoln Lawyer series and the Harry Bosch series.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Brass Verdict

Michael Connelly- The Brass Verdict (Little, Brown and Company 2008) 4.25 Stars

When Mickey Haller was shot after his last court case, he became addicted to the pain killers. He has now completed his rehab and is looking to ease back into the courtroom scene, but fate has something else in mind. A friend of his is murdered and all his cases are thrown into Mickey Haller’s lap, including the case of a lifetime. A big movie producer has been accused of killing his wife and her lover, and it is Haller’s job to get him off, but will it come with a bigger price tag than he is willing to pay?

I loved the introductory page in this novel. It made me laugh out loud and I had to read it to my wife. After that it tapers a little as it sets you up for all the thrilling pages to follow. I love the characters in this novel; they have a lot of depth. I also enjoy how Connelly ties in characters from his other books, as it keeps you up to date with what is going on in their lives. The plot in this book was great, it twists and turns leaving you unsure about what to expect; you just never know who to believe, but Connelly kind of prepares you for that with the introduction. It then ends with a bang and a personal twist you likely won’t see coming. I actually don’t have any real complaints with this one, except maybe wishing it had gotten fast-paced a little quicker, but that is just being picky.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Overlook

Michael Connelly- The Overlook (Vision Books 2008) 3.75 Stars

Dr. Stanley Kent has just been discovered on the overlook with two bullets in the back of his head. Now Harry Bosch must try to find the killer, but he isn’t the only one interested in this case. Agent Walling of the FBI has been handed the case as it has taken a terrorist angle. Bumping heads as Bosch fights to keep his case; they must try to solve this case before things escalate out of their control.

The introduction to this book was a little slower than I am used to from Connelly, but it was still interesting enough for me to keep reading. It had a good plot that kept moving at a fast clip, changing direction many times. The characters were well done and their tensions added to the intensity. I did find myself wondering how Bosch suddenly jumped to the conclusion he did. The ending was very good and intense; it was a great way to end a novel. The bonus chapter at the end tied things up nicely, although the original ending would have been just fine as well. Overall I thought that the book pretty good.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Echo Park

Michael Connelly- Echo Park (Warner Books 2007) 4.5 Stars

Information has come up about an old case that Harry Bosch
worked years ago. To avoid a death sentence, a man is going to confess to a
list of murders and provide locations for the bodies. Harry Bosch is now
working with the lawyers to close out his old case. The course of events that
would follow, no one could have foreseen.

This book was very different from the other books in this
series. It was quite interesting and had some great twists that kept you
guessing until the end. The plot was action-packed and weaved a web of
intrigue. The characters were really well done, and worked in nicely with the
plot. This is one of the best in this series, if not by this author; I did like
Five Dragons better. I can’t really think of anything negative to say and that
does not happen too often. Overall I certainly recommend this book to any
thriller enthusiasts.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Closers

Michael Connelly- The Closers (Grand Central Publishing 2006) 3.75 Stars

Returning to the job after retiring, Harry Bosch is now part of a new sector of the homicide squad, they are called The Closers. They look into cases that have remained unsolved for many years, and are hoping to close the file after all these years. They have the DNA of a man connected to the murder, but they quickly discover that there may be more to this case than there seems.

This book was good. It moved rather slowly and was a little tough to get into. At the same time it was interesting to see how they had to uncover details and the work they had to put in to get that information. The plot was pretty good, with lots of great twists. Connelly is great at describing the setting as well, which helped the plot move along. The characters were good, as per usual for this author. I enjoy the character of Harry Bosch; he gets deeper with every book. I enjoy this series, but this was not the best book in the series.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Narrows

Michael Connelly- The Narrows (Warner Books 2005) 4.25 Stars

The Poet has turned back up after years of silence and Rachel Walling is being dragged back into the task force after years of being shunned by the FBI. Little does she realize that she will soon be working with retired LAPD detective Harry Bosch, who has discovered something that ties in with their case. Now they must work together to hunt down this psychopath before he finishes what he started.

I liked this instalment by Michael Connelly. I am not sure which series this was meant to fit into as it kind of dragged in characters from many of Connelly’s others works. I saddened by Terry McCaleb’s death, but it was nice to see Graciela (his wife) and his daughter/son. It was also nice to see Buddy resurface and how Connelly played off the fact that a movie was made of the first book. Rachel Walling was interesting to see again, although it was annoying to see her sleep with yet another man on the case; this does not say much for her that she cannot work with a man on the case without sleeping with him. It is great how Connelly often ties his series’ together; it adds a depth to his works. The plot was a great one with lots of twists and turns, and just when you think it is over, you see that something else was not as it seemed. I also liked how they set it up for more books containing Bosch and the return of his little girl. Connelly is showing us Bosch’s softer side.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Lost Light

Michael Connelly- Lost Light (Warner Books 2004) 3.75 Stars

Every officer has a case that got away. The one they couldn’t catch. For retired officer Harry Bosch it is the Angella Benton case; one he had for about four hours. Her death was linked to the armed robbery of two million dollars from a movie set, but neither case was ever solved. Now he is looking into it and he is finding that people more powerful than him do not want him digging into the case.

This book was really hard to get into, I only kept reading because it was a Harry Bosch novel. That being said, about a quarter of the way through the pace picked up and things started to get rolling. From that point on I was hooked. The plot was good, it certainly kept you guessing. I never would have seen the last chapter coming if I had not read later books in the series. I found the characters were good, but not great, Connelly has certainly done a better job of character creation. I do wish that he had found some way of making the beginning more interesting. I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy Connelly and the Bosch series.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Scarecrow

Michael Connelly- The Scarecrow (Grand Central Publishing 2008) 3.75 Stars

Jack McEvoy has cracked many a case wide open with his journalistic prowess, but now he finds himself being laid off for making too much money. Wanting to go out with a bang he digs into the case of Alonzo Winslow, a young punk who says he is being wrongly accused of murder, yet he has confessed. McEvoy must figure out just what Alonzo confessed to and in the process he discovers a connection to an identical murder in Las Vegas. In his search, he warns the killer of his hunt and finds himself a target as well.

This book took me quite some time to get into, and I found myself wishing for a better introductory chapter, especially from such a seasoned author. However, when it did pick up it really got intense. The plot moves a long at a fast pace for the latter two-thirds of the novel. I also love the characters in this book, and it is interesting to see how McEvoy does his job so well. Normally in thrillers we see ourselves hating the journalists, yet in this book we are engrossed in McEvoy’s work. I enjoyed seeing the return of Rachel Walling, and their tense relationship. It was interesting that Connelly did not try to hide the guilty party from us in this book, which made you cringe as they make wrong assumptions; this is different from Connelly’s usual style. Overall I did enjoy this novel and would certainly recommend it to thriller fans.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Chasing the Dime

Michael Connelly- Chasing the Dime (Warner Books 2002) 3.5 Stars

When Henry Pierce moves into a new apartment and gets his phone hooked up, he has no idea just what he is getting himself into. Phone calls keep coming in for Lilly, a young woman who had the number before him. He tries to focus on his job, involving a scientific breakthrough worth millions, but cannot stop thinking about the phone calls. He now finds himself searching for a woman who is in trouble, a woman he doesn’t even know. Where it will take him, he cannot possibly have ever guessed…

I found that this book took me a while to get into, which is rare for Connelly books. Knowing Connelly, I knew that it had to pick up at some point, which was about halfway through the book. When it did pick up, it was an exciting thrill-ride. The characters were interesting, though we only really got to know one of the characters. I would have liked to have known a little more about the other characters in the book. I liked how Connelly ties in the Doll Maker Case from the Harry Bosch series; it gave the book more depth. The ending was intense and I never saw it coming, and it is not very often that I can say that about a book. It was interesting to see the work that Henry does in this book and how it ties into the book as a whole, although at times it did slow things down more than I liked. I would recommend this book to Connelly fans.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- A Darkness More Than Night

Michael Connelly- A Darkness More Than Night (Warner Books 2002) 3.75 Stars

When who got away with murdering others is found tortured and killed, Detective Jaye Winston takes on the case, but she quickly calls on retired criminal profiler Terry McCaleb to assist her on the case. McCaleb is able to find a hidden message in the murder that leads to Detective Harry Bosch coming under suspicion. Harry Bosch will now have to fight to clear his name, all the while being a star witness in the criminal trial of a lifetime.

I found that this one was harder to get into than most of Connelly’s other work, but once you get into it you are hooked. I also found that at times it seems like there was too much going on, two story lines at once is a little much, but when they connected them you could see why Connelly did it this way. This book did seem like it was more of an in between the other books in these three series’ whose characters make appearances. The plot was quite good and was certainly interesting once you got into the book. The character development was not as good as I have seen in other books, but was decent. I did like how we got to see a different side of Bosch; Connelly showed us that Bosch really does care about the victims in his cases. I recommend this book to fans of Connelly.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Trunk Music

Michael Connelly- Trunk Music (St. Martin’s Press 1998) 4.25 Stars

Detective Bosch has been on an involuntary stress leave and when the body of a cheap movie producer is found dead inside the trunk of his car, it looks like a mob hit, but Bosch does not want to give up his first case in a long time. Money is usually a great motivator and it appears to be the same with this case. When the money takes Bosch to Vegas he discovers that the man was dealing was some dealing with some unsavoury people, and in following the case Bosch must deal with them as well. The big boys don’t play fair and he must show them how real player plays, but he soon realizes that an old flame is somehow involved and Eleanor Wish might be into more than she can handle.

I enjoy how Connelly gets the reader involved in the crime immediately, drawing your attention early on. This makes it easier to get into the book. Then because of Bosch’s hard-case attitude he usually brushes someone the wrong way, ensuring that you are going to see fireworks. Bosch is a character with many sides and we see those sides in this book. I wish I had not read later books as I know exactly how things turn out for him with his associates/flames. It was an interesting plot that this one followed and I am always amused by Bosch’s tough-guy act and how he deals with those who cross him. One thing I did not like was how I knew who the guilty parties were early on, although it took a while to find out that I was correct in my guess. I did still like seeing how it all played out Bosch’s mind turned to eventually figure out what I had guessed.

I do recommend Trunk Music and the Bosch series to anyone who loves a good thriller/mystery.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Poet

Michael Connelly- The Poet (Warner Books 2004) 3.75 Stars

Jack McEvoy has a comfortable position in the newspaper he works for. He gets to cover death and picks his own stories. Suddenly police brother dies and it is ruled suicide, but that just doesn’t add up for Jack. Now he is choosing to write a story about police deaths, which means he can investigate the circumstances around his brother’s death. He quickly discovers that his suspicions were actually fact, his brother was murdered and now he is going to find out just who is responsible for this atrocity. A serial killer is on the loose and he is leaving quotes from Edgar Allan Poe as his calling card. If Jack is careful this may very well end up being the last story he ever writes.

I loved the opening sentence as it was an interesting way to start off a book. The opening pages were not the most intriguing, but it was necessary for setting the stage for the rest of the book. I did find myself wishing it was a little bit more attention grabbing however, I have never found it take this long to get into a Connelly book. He set the ball rolling early on with Jack’s suspicions though which was good. I liked the character of Jack as he was a nice change from Harry Bosch, whom I do enjoy reading about. I did not enjoy the amount of sex in this book, although that can be very hard to avoid nowadays. The plot in this book was well planned and well executed from an experienced and hardened writer. I enjoyed the ending twist Connelly played me liked a fiddle. I completely thought he was going one way and was disappointed in the fact that I had suspected it all along, but then he hits one to left field were my fielding was weak, and I was like, “Whoa man! Were did that come from?” I loved to get shocked in a book, it says a lot about the skill of the author. I also liked how the first sentence in the closing chapters is the same as the opening line, as it ties the beginning in perfectly.

I recommend The Poet to thriller lovers and Connelly fans.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Blood Work

After his heart began crashing Terrell McCaleb had to retire from his position at the FBI. He has been waiting and hoping for a match to his rare blood type so that he can receive his new heart, and just when he has given up hope one comes in for him. Now suddenly Graciela Rivers approaches him with a plea for help in solving his sister’s murder. Set on refusing and enjoying some time on his boat, he is shocked to find out that the murder victim was the woman whose heart he now has. A desire to repay the woman for her sacrifice sets him out on a dangerous hunt for the serial killer who is on the lose.

This is the first we see of McCaleb and he seems to be a solid character. I wish that we had seen more of these other villains he was mentioning, maybe having them in previous novels would have helped, but alas this is not the case, so we must learn about these villains through McCaleb. The opening pages did not grab me, although they were necessary for the plot development. It did not take long however for me to get into Blood Work, it was a fast-paced novel that left my mind working on figuring out the details, even after closing the book. I did kind of guess how it would end, although it did not play out quite as I had anticipated. The last few pages were cliché, but still fit in nicely. McCaleb is a complex character with many flaws, which makes him all the more realistic. I loved the twists that Connelly through in, and how McCaleb had to work hard to figure things out, details did not just come to him. Overall I really enjoyed this book, and will definitely read more of this series, another great read coming from an author I love.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Lincoln Lawyer

Michael Connelly- The Lincoln Lawyer (Warner Books 2006) 4 Stars

Mickey Haller thinks he has a good life, four Lincoln Town Cars, two ex-wives who remain his friends, and one daughter, but all of that is about to be threatened. When he chooses to defend the son of a rich real estate tycoon, he has no idea just what he is getting himself into. He sees the money and what it could do for his defence-attorney business. Louis Roulet is accused of a brutal assault, rape, and attempted murder, and Haller thinks he can win in court. All of a sudden Mickey Haller finds himself looking the devil in the eye, and fighting to set a truly innocent man free. Not used to having to work to win a case, true justice may not be so easy to get, especially when it could cost him everything he has accomplished.

I must admit at first I was not sure about The Lincoln Lawyer. It did not grab my attention right away like I am used to with Connelly’s work. I was getting a little bit tired of so many details on cases that were irrelevant to the story at hand. About a quarter of the way through though I was finding myself growing more and more interested, and by the end I was very glad that I had chosen to read this book. Connelly knows how to hold his readers in suspense and keep them guessing. I did not see the end coming, not until it slapped me in the face. Mickey Haller was a fairly deep character. At the start he is a self-absorbed, lazy defence attorney, but throughout the book we see him learning the error of his ways, the hard way. By the end he is a better man, who has gotten his priorities straightened out. I loved the way he was able to twist the events/witnesses into whatever he wanted, sickening, but brilliant. Connelly certainly knows how to create characters, and make plots that draw the reader into the book.

I recommend The Lincoln Lawyer to Connelly fans and those who love a good courtroom book.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- 9 Dragons

Michael Connelly- 9 Dragons (Little, Brown and Company 2009) 5 Stars

Harry Bosch is sent to investigate what appears to be a routine robbery gone wrong, when he discovers that he has met the victim in one of his previous cases. Looking into the matter he determines that it was not a robbery, and it certainly was not routine. The more he digs the more tangled the weaving web becomes. After discovering evidence leading to the Hong Kong Triads the case steps up a notch on the danger meter. Suddenly his life is thrown into turmoil. His daughter goes missing and a video is sent to him from her phone, now he is not only investigating a murder, but he must fight to get his daughter back and fight he will. Taking the first flight to Hong Kong he cuts a deadly swath across Hong Kong all in the hopes of getting his daughter back safely, in a manner the Triads can understand despite the language barrier. The world is about to find out just how tough and deadly Harry Bosch can be.

Wow! Yes 9 Dragons is as good as it sounds. This was probably my favourite in the Harry Bosch series yet. We see Bosch’s soft side as well as his brutally tough side. I was impressed by just how deep the characters were. I loved the fact that 9 Dragons took Bosch across the globe into a world completely unknown to him as it gave the readers a chance to see how Harry Bosch handled strange situations and foreign language barriers. We also get to see how he deals with his many mistakes. The setting was described wonderfully, even when in some of the raunchiest areas of Hong Kong. Twist after twist keeps this storyline fast-paced and works to run your mind in circles. Just when you think you have everything figured out Connelly flips the case upside down, and Bosch doesn’t just magically figure out the answers, he has to work to the point of insanity to find any ounce of truth/evidence. It was a wonderfully created plot and I look forward to seeing more from Connelly.

I recommend 9 Dragons to Connelly fans and anyone who enjoys mysteries/thrillers.

Michael Connelly- The Black Ice (St. Martin’s Press 1994) 4.25 Stars

Harry Bosch is hunting down the clues on a case that wasn’t his, but somehow is connected to his own cases. So far he has one dead cop and dangerous drug ties which lead to more deaths and the life of Bosch could be shortened greatly. Can Bosch stop the killer before the killer stops him?

Once again Connelly has done a great job. I enjoyed this mystery as Bosch was taken across borders for The Black Ice, which meant that I got to see a little bit of Mexico. Connelly has a way of creating a very interesting plot with complex details that lead to some great twists, and The Black Ice was no exception. I also like Bosch and how he always finds a way to rub his bosses the wrong way. Even with his authority problems he still manages to be a great detective, who manages to solve the most complex of cases, hence the reason why his superiors put up with him. The Black Ice is a great early addition to this popular series.
I recommend The Black Ice for mystery lovers and fans of Michael Connelly.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Last Coyote

Michael Connelly- The Last Coyote (Little, Brown and Company 2007) 3.75 Stars

Harry Bosch is on suspension for assaulting his Lieutenant and is in mandatory counselling sessions. Not one to sit still he has decided to do something he should have done long ago, look into his mother’s murder. Things spiral out of control quickly as he unearths secrets long forgotten.

This book has a really slow beginning that I wish Connelly had found a way to avoid. When the action started happening though, it really started happening, gripping your attention and making it hard to stop reading. We learn a little bit more about Bosch’s past in The Last Coyote, explaining why he decided to become a police officer to begin with, and maybe helping understand where his anger issues come from. I always love the investigative portions of Connelly’s books and this one was no different.

I recommend this book to Connelly fans, mystery/thriller lovers, and anyone looking for a good book.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- Angels Flight

Michael Connelly- Angels Flight (Warner Books 2000) 4.75 Stars

Harry Bosch returns in Angels Flight, a great thriller/mystery. Bosch must deal with politics as he is being restrained by the department’s tense relations with the public. A lawyer who makes money suing police and the police department turns up dead along with another civilian. Suddenly the public is ready to riot and are pointing fingers at the department. Meanwhile Bosch is trying to get to the bottom of it, whether or not the department likes his methods.
Angels Flight was very intense as is to be expected from a Harry Bosch novel. I loved the way the novel just gripped my attention early on and would not let up for a second. Bosch is such a deep character that I feel there is always something new to learn about him. I did figure out early who was responsible for the crime, and yet I still loved the twists and turns Bosch had to take to get to the culprit, weaving through political hoops. The end still managed to come as a surprise, not ending the way I thought it would. The case had a lot for the reader to follow and yet I found that the way it was written I could easily follow what was happening.
I would recommend Angels Flight to Harry Bosch enthusiasts, Michael Connelly followers, and mystery/thriller lovers!
