Book Review- Sidney Sheldon- The Sky is Falling

Sidney Sheldon- The Sky is Falling (William Morrow 2000) 3.25 Stars
The
I wasn’t immediately grabbed by this book, but there was something about the main character that made me want read on. I thought that the characters were brilliantly done, a great job by this experienced author. I also found it interesting to see the characters travel all around the world, although there really wasn’t a lot of description on the setting, and it would have been cool to see that. The plot was descent, but could have been better, I felt that it was a little cheesy in parts and the main character was a little naïve. I did enjoy some of the twists, although I found myself saying, “Right!” I do enjoy books about reporters though; there is just something about the hunt for information. Overall I thought that this book was okay, but it could have been better.

Book Review- Linwood Barclay- Never Look Away

Linwood Barclay- Never Look Away (Anchor Canada 2010) 3.25 Stars
David Harwood is a reporter on the hunt. He is digging up dirt on a privately owned prison wanting to move into
I found this novel really hard to get into. The first third was kind of slow moving, but the last two thirds were fast-paced. I enjoyed how much you had to think to figure out just what was going to happen next, although it wasn’t completely unpredictable. I did enjoy seeing the return of Detective Duckworth; although at times he seems a little slow on the uptake. Most of the characters in this book were not really strong in my opinion, just okay. The situations in this novel were not all that realistic, and I must say especially the ending. I was not impressed at all with the ending, it was a disappointment. Overall it was an okay book, but I have seen better by this author.

Book Review- Michael Connelly- The Poet

Michael Connelly- The Poet (Warner Books 2004) 3.75 Stars
Jack McEvoy has a comfortable position in the newspaper he works for. He gets to cover death and picks his own stories. Suddenly police brother dies and it is ruled suicide, but that just doesn’t add up for Jack. Now he is choosing to write a story about police deaths, which means he can investigate the circumstances around his brother’s death. He quickly discovers that his suspicions were actually fact, his brother was murdered and now he is going to find out just who is responsible for this atrocity. A serial killer is on the loose and he is leaving quotes from Edgar Allan Poe as his calling card. If Jack is careful this may very well end up being the last story he ever writes.
I loved the opening sentence as it was an interesting way to start off a book. The opening pages were not the most intriguing, but it was necessary for setting the stage for the rest of the book. I did find myself wishing it was a little bit more attention grabbing however, I have never found it take this long to get into a Connelly book. He set the ball rolling early on with Jack’s suspicions though which was good. I liked the character of Jack as he was a nice change from Harry Bosch, whom I do enjoy reading about. I did not enjoy the amount of sex in this book, although that can be very hard to avoid nowadays. The plot in this book was well planned and well executed from an experienced and hardened writer. I enjoyed the ending twist Connelly played me liked a fiddle. I completely thought he was going one way and was disappointed in the fact that I had suspected it all along, but then he hits one to left field were my fielding was weak, and I was like, “Whoa man! Were did that come from?” I loved to get shocked in a book, it says a lot about the skill of the author. I also liked how the first sentence in the closing chapters is the same as the opening line, as it ties the beginning in perfectly.
I recommend The Poet to thriller lovers and Connelly fans.

Book Review- Rick Mofina- No Way Back

Rick Mofina- No Way Back (Pinnacle Books 2003) 4 Stars
When a jewellery store heist goes wrong Ann Reed finds herself being held hostage by the fleeing criminals who just happen to be psychopathic killers. A cop is murdered in the getaway and now reporter Tom Reed has been given the assignment of a lifetime, he gets to cover career-making story. Tom is hoping that this will be his last story and when he finds out that his wife is the hostage the story becomes personal. Tom will soon discover that he knows one of the men who took his wife, through a story in a crime series he sent the man back to prison and caused the suicide of the man’s wife. Now the man has taken Tom’s wife and intends to set up a trap to teach Tom a brutal lesson.
Canadian author Rick Mofina writes a nail-biting thriller. At first I was not sure what I thought of this novel, but once I got into it I could not put it down. The introduction is good as it draws the reader in and starts with an action scene that makes the reader wonder what they have gotten themselves into. Am I going to end up with nightmares of being held hostage by a psychotic killer? Then it slows down a bit to let us get to know Tom Reed and his background, first knowing him as a reporter and family man who wants to get out of the dark and dangerous stories business. Quickly we learn that his reporting of dangerous stories is an addiction, and as you read on you wonder if this story is going to be the cure for his addiction. We also see him getting a taste of his own medicine as he comes face-to-face with reporters who mirror his aggressive style as they chase after him for interviews. The situation becomes more tense as it goes on, letting know important details on the criminals who are responsible for the heist/hostage taking. The ending was fairly good, although I was somehow hoping for a little bit more.
I recommend No Way Back to anyone who loves a good thriller.

Book Review- Jeffery Deaver- Hard News

Rune is tired of being a simple cameragirl and wants to move on to the big times, Current Events. What she has discovered might just get her there, or it could get her fired. Randy Boggs claims to be innocent and that he should not be in prison, Rune believes him. Her story about him might just get him free, but someone else does not want the story to come out. Prison life for Boggs has suddenly gotten to hot to handle and Rune must avoid letting the story kill her.
With a great sounding storyline I expected a little bit more from Deaver, don’t get me wrong it was a good book just not as good as I had hoped. The characters were filled with depth and I loved Rune as she wasn’t your typical main character. A couple of sections were a little bit disappointing as they just didn’t add up to what they could have. On the other hand it was great to look at her struggling to raise a child that is not hers, while still trying to do her job. The action scenes were also very intriguing. I also enjoyed the very end of the book as it was kind of different, but the early ending was not so great, I’d tell you why but that might spoil it for you.
I recommend Hard News to Deaver fans, people who like books about reporters, and thriller fans.
