The Library of Lost Dreams: Journey Into the Past: A. Goanta: Book Review

 4.5/5

This book was sent to me by the author for review, which has not impacted the outcome or results. The opinions stated are mine and mine alone.

Having reviewed book 1 of this series, I had higher expectations for book 2. I looked for improvements and growth. In Journey Into the Past, I was not disappointed. The intro was far better in this book. Goanta crafted it in a way that will draw kids in and make them wonder what is coming next. Once again, it had stunning visuals that assist in telling the story. I can't imagine a child who would not look at the pictures and be amazed. Like the introduction, the rest of the book captures the reader's attention. One example of this is in the use of descriptive writing. Goanta is descriptive, but not to the point of it possibly losing a child. With kid's books this is a fine line that an author has to walk. At no point did I feel that a child's attention would wane.

I did find that when Dahlia arrives she is confused for longer than she should have been, but this was a minor detail. Another minor detail was that Dahlia seemed a bit shallower. However, it is a second book, so much of her depth was crafted in book 1. Looking at the concept and twist, these were both interesting and fun. I could see kids enjoying that. To wrap it up, the ending also was creative and fun.

Overall, I would happily recommend this book to parents with kids who have a creative mind.

Book Review- Joyce Sweeney- Free Fall

Joyce Sweeney- Free Fall 1.25 Stars

Neil, his brother David, best friend Randy, and his brother’s friend Terry, all decide to go cave exploring. A morning of fun, and then off to work, that was the plan. They never imagined that they could possibly get lost within that cave and its network of tunnels. Now they are fighting to find a way out of the cave before it takes all of their lives.

The introduction nearly lost me. It was tedious and took too long to get to the point of the novel. It never really grabbed my attention, just plodded along barely keeping me reading. The book had a good basic plot, but was just lacking that certain wow factor. The characters were a redeeming quality. They were very well done, and had depth. I loved to see the personal struggles of each character and how the cave made them face each fear/struggle. Overall though, I would not recommend this book.

Book Review- James Rollins- Excavation

James Rollins- Excavation 3.75 Stars

Excavating an archaeological site in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin and his group of students unearth an old mummy who was an old friar. The students are exploring the site and come across an underground passage filled with deadly traps. This site is filled with a vast richness, far beyond the important historical knowledge. All of this may appear wonderful on the outside, but inside, they may be unearthing something far more dangerous than they ever thought possible.

The introduction to this book was pretty good. It draws the reader in, making you want to read more and find out how it is going to tie into the rest of the book. The book kept me on the edge of my seat for the majority of the novel. It was a fast-paced plot with many great twists and turns. I do not usually enjoys sci-fi twists, but in the case of this novel, it fit perfectly, a little too odd for me, but overall it was well done. The characters were fairly well-crafted and assisted the storyline nicely. Overall it was an enjoyable read, although a little too sci-fi for me to keep it.

Book Review- Howard Pyle- Robin Hood

Howard Pyle- Robin Hood 3.25 Stars

I won’t bother summarising this classic as I think you all know the basics about Robin Hood. I was actually surprised at how different this was from what I expected, especially the fact that Maid Marian doesn’t make an appearance until three-quarters of the way through the book, and then it is just for one chapter as well as one mention later on. It seems that movie makers have taken a lot of liberties with this book and have changed so much about it. It covers so much more time than I was expecting as well. I did enjoy reading this novel, once I got past all the ‘doths’ and ‘quoths’. It did seem choppy in its writing style. It was more like a collection of short stories about Robin Hood in the way that it was put together, but it keeps the reader intrigued about what trouble he was going to get himself into next. His playful personality is what gets him into the most amount of trouble every time. This makes for an amusing read. The characters were also very well done, they seemed quite realistic and I love how we see him battling it out with the same people every time, yet there actually was very little killing. Overall I enjoyed this classic, but would have liked it better if it didn’t feel so choppy at times.

Book Review- Jules Verne- A Journey to the Center of the Earth

Jules Verne- A Journey to the Center of the Earth 3.25 Stars

Hardwigg and his nephew Harry are embarking on a quest to find the center of the Earth. Using their guide Hans, they descend into a Volcano down a tunnel that leads deep beneath the earth’s crust. The perilous journey has some unexpected trials, but leads them to the unimaginable.

A bit of a slow start to this book, I was questioning if I should be continuing. It never really picked up to a point that I was captivated by it, but it interested me enough to finish. It had some cool parts about what they discovered and experienced. Verne definitely had a great imagination and it shines through on every page. The ending though was a little to unrealistic for me, but it was a great unexpected twist. Overall I can now say that I have read this classic, but likely would not read it again.

Book Review- Mel Odom- Vertical Limit

Mel Odom- Vertical Limit (Pocket Books 2000) 4.25 Stars

Peter and Annie haven’t spoken since the day their father died in a climbing accident. Blame and hard feelings have prevented them from communicating. He has taken off to photograph animals in the wilderness and she has become a reporter. Now she has been sent to join a rich billionaire’s climb up K2, a mountain that has claimed many lives. When disaster strikes and Annie is stuck on the mountain, they must put aside their differences as Peter climbs again to save her.

I really enjoyed the introduction for this book, it grabbed me immediately. After the introduction we see how the accident has affected them both, and it helped develop the characters a little, but I did think they could have been a bit stronger. The plot was really good and took us on a harrowing tale of a dangerous mountain climb. I found this to be surprisingly intriguing considering that I do not generally read this kind of book. I did remember a little of the movie, but not a lot, so it had some great surprises. I actually found the climbing adventure to be a wonderful break from my usual reading choices. Overall I loved the book and would quickly recommend it to people.

Book Review- Andy McDermott- The Secret Vault

Andy McDermott- The Secret Vault (Bantam Books 2011) 3.5 Stars

When precious art begins to go missing from around the world, security is beefed up around the newly discovered Talonor Codex. Nina Wilde had discovered this journal when she found Atlantis. A gutsy robbery attempt begins Nina and Eddie’s race against the clock as they try to find the clues in the Codex that will lead to the mythical Vault of Shiva, before the villain does. As an ancient faith is twisted to suit someone’s needs, Nina must work with true followers to find the truth before it is too late.

These books always start off great, with an introduction that grabs your attention. That being said, it is also always followed by a boring section that could have been trimmed down. The whole wedding scene could have been cut, as it was just fluff. This one picked up quicker than many of the other books by him though, which I was happy with. It was very fast-paced and action-packed, something McDermott is really good at. The overall plot was pretty good as well, with several good twists, although it was not unpredictable. The final twist is setting up for the next book, that one was a bit of a surprise. The ending was really good, a great way to wrap things up. The realism was definitely a weak point once again, but it was counteracted by getting to see all kinds of cool places. The characters were also a strong point, although they can be a little cheesy at times. Overall this was a better book by this author.

Book Review- S. L. Linnea- Chasing Eden

S. L. Linnea- Chasing Eden (St. Martin’s 2007) 3 Stars

With Iraq at war Jaime Richards is a chaplain in the army. She is suddenly reunited with her friend Adara out in the desert and is thrown into a mission to protect the secret of Eden from falling into the wrong hands. A secret society wants it for the wrong reasons, and protecting the secret might be more than she can handle.

It started off in a really interesting manner that grabbed my attention immediately. I then started to lose attention and only gained the feeling back a few times. The characters were very well done and were definitely a redeeming quality of the book. The overall storyline was good and should have led to a quicker-paced book than this was. I did love the ending, it wrapped things up nicely. Overall it was an okay book, but I wouldn’t slap my personal recommendation on it.

Book Review- Andy McDermott- The Secret of Excalibur

Andy McDermott- The Secret of Excalibur (Bantam Books 2010) 2 Stars

When Nina Wilde’s friend is killed after revealing that he can track down Excalibur, she takes up the hunt. However a group of Russians seem to want more, so much more that they are willing to kill for it. Whoever wields the sword has the power of the Earth’s energy and can create a super weapon. Nina and Eddie must prevent the sword from being used as a weapon and stay alive in the process.

It took me quite awhile to get into this book. It started off pretty slow, but did manage to pick up the pace. It then was really action-packed and filled with unrealistic scenes that put the characters in situations they never could have gotten out of. The characters were shot and beaten to a pulp and yet carried on and won each situation. I also found the “earth energy” thing far-fetched and very hard to believe. The characters were fairly well done, which was a positive in this novel. I did also enjoy how it travelled the globe; I always love seeing various parts of the world in books. Overall I would not recommend this book as it just seemed to go from one unrealistic situation to the next.

Book Review- Brad Meltzer- The Book of Lies

Brad Meltzer- The Book of Lies (Grand Central Publishing 2009) 3.75 Stars

Years ago Cain killed Abel, the first murder, but no one knows what was used to kill him. In 1932 gunshots took down Jerry Siegel’s father, leaving him all alone. To help him cope he creates Superman. Only now, years later has the gun been found again. Cal has just been reunited with his father when he finds his father after he is shot. Now they are on a historical hunt years in the making, trying to stop those who intend to use what they are seeking for evil.

The introduction was pretty good in this one; it certainly makes you interested in what there is to come. The treasure hunt/adventure type storyline made for some interesting puzzles to figure out and watch the characters hurry to beat the clock. I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of this novel that kept you wondering what was coming next. The big twist was kind of a surprise for me; I was completely thinking it was heading in a different direction. I also found it interesting to find out background information on the Superman story. The characters were decent in this one; I felt that they could have used a little bit more depth. I also really loved the ending as it was a great way to conclude the events. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book and will certainly be reading more by this author.

Book Review- Andy McDermott- The Pyramid of Doom

Andy McDermott- The Pyramid of Doom (Bantam Books 2010) 3.25 Stars

Uncovering an ancient vault beneath the Great Sphinx is becoming a huge TV opportunity, but someone may be trying to beat the archaeologists to the prize. Macy Sharif, a student, has found out about their plan though and is now on the run for her life. Who does she run to but the shunned Nina Wilde and her ex-SAS husband. Together they are up against a rich cult who is on the hunt for an ancient secret behind death.

It took me quite a while to get into this book, kind of a slow start. I was hoping that it would have had a way better introduction that would get my attention right off the bat. Once it did pick up though it was quite intense and fast-paced. The plot was pretty good with some twists and turns, though none that I thought were fantastic. The characters were also pretty good with some depth to them. I did think that the bad guys were pretty stupid and gullible, so it would have been nice to see them be more of a challenge for Nina and her crew. I also thought that the plausibility was lacking and things just worked out a little too well. I also don’t understand how people could have gotten beaten up so much and still kept going on. Overall though it was an interesting read and it was good for a one-time pick.

Book Review- Ian Fleming- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Ian Fleming- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Scholastic 1964) 3 Stars

The Pott family was living the life of the poor in England. No car and struggling to get by with Mr. Pott’s inventions, until he invents a candy that whistles. Now they have a car that he has altered and found out it is magical. Adventure awaits them across the sea in France, maybe more than they had bargained for!

I only chose to read this book because I had watched the movie a long time ago. It was a little slow in sections, but kids would probably be more enthralled by the magical flying car thing to notice. It also lacked much of a plot, just going on about how great Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is. It was interesting to see France and England, as I have never been to either country. The characters were very well done, a redeeming quality of this book. I would definitely say that the concept behind this book is great, but it is lacking that oomph to make it great. Kids will likely enjoy this book though, as they don’t care about all these little aforementioned details like us adults do.

Book Review- Gordon Korman- Chasing the Falconers

Gordon Korman- Chasing the Falconers (Scholastic 2005) 3.25 Stars

The Falconers have been put in prison for treason; their children are now wards of the state. Aiden and Meg do not believe in the guilt of their parents, and think that they can prove their innocence. Running across the country, they must flee agents who wish to bring them back in. The treasure hunt for justice has begun.

I must admit I read the second instalment before the first. I remember liking the second book, but this one wasn’t quite as good. It got off to a really slow start, without having read the next book I may not have kept reading. However, once they begin their flight from the law it certainly picks up the pace. The plot is good, although not great. The characters are pretty good and help the flow of the book; it shows you the importance of family and friendship. The setting was good as it is constantly changing, so it keeps you on your toes. One thing I was not fond of was the predictability and that is not just because of reading the second book first. I would have liked situations to end in more of surprising manner. Overall it is a good series that I would keep reading, but this was not the best start.

Book Review- Johann Wyss- The Swiss Family Robinson

Johann Wyss- The Swiss Family Robinson (Moby Books 1983) 3.25 Stars

When the boat that the Robinson family is on, wrecks near an island, the crew leaves them behind in the middle of a storm. Now they have found their way to the island that the crew missed during the storm. They now must fend for themselves and use the supplies on boat to build a shelter and provide a food supply. What adventures will they find on the island?

This classic I had tried reading years ago, and have returned to try again. The writing is strong and the overall plot is decent. I did find that the plot could have been a little deeper. I also thought that Wyss was trying a little too hard to make it adventurous; it seemed a little stretched at times. The characters were really well done and seemed to jump off of every page. It was kind of interesting to see what they discovered. Overall I thought the book was okay, a good one time classic read.

Book Review- Cynthia DeFelice- Lostman’s River

Cynthia DeFelice- Lostman’s River (Avon Books 1995) 3.75 Stars

Tyler McCauley’s family has been hiding from the law in a house along the Lostman’s River. He has come to love the birds and nature surrounding him, but now that is all at risk. Plume hunters are becoming more dangerous and Tyler must lead a man on a scientific expedition. Now Tyler must fight to save the land he loves before it is destroyed.

I liked this book, but at times my attention did waver. The plot was pretty good, and the message behind it was a great one. It was interesting to see how Tyler tried to handle the situations presented him. The characters were wonderfully crafted and helped the story along. It was sad to see the destruction humanity is wreaking on nature and sad to see people destroying the animals saying that they would be fine seen in museums only. Overall I thought this book was pretty good, but had a few bit of tweaking to make it great.
