This is a blog for my reviews. As an author I (Tony Peters), love to read and doing reviews makes me actually think about what I am reading. This is a way for people to see what I am reading and what I recommend. My other passion is becoming Photography, so I have incorporated this in for what I hope is your pleasure.

Book Review- Sara Gruen- Water for Elephants

Sara Gruen- Water for Elephants (Harper Perennial 2011) 4 Stars
Jacob has just lost his parents in the middle of the depression and leaving during his final veterinarian exams, he hops on a random train in the hopes of leaving his problems behind. Now he is part of the circus and he is using his vet skills to look after their animals. He has now found two things he loves, Rosie an elephant, and Marlena a married woman, whose husband’s mood swings make her a prime target of abuse. Trapped and not sure what to do, he may be forced into action as the circus crumbles around him.
The introduction was very good; it gets you into the book immediately, making you want to find out how this outtake is going to fit into the rest of the book. The plot was interesting, taking shape beautifully as it carried you through the life of this elderly man. It switched back and forth from past to present smoothly. Normally these shifts annoy me, but with this book it seemed natural. It was wonderfully told and captivated my attention. I did find myself wishing for less smut, as it really was not necessary. The characters jumped off of every page. They were very well done. The circus setting was unique, as you do not see many books about the circus, keeping this one fresh. The author also must have done a lot of research and showed this in the book. I also enjoyed the conclusion, it was a fitting way to end the novel. Overall, I think that this book is worth the hype and plan to watch the movie now that I have read the book.

Book Review- Lisa Jackson- Deep Freeze

Lisa Jackson- Deep Freeze (Zebra 2005) 3.25 Stars
Jenna Hughes is a beautiful actress on the top of her game. After disaster strikes the set of film, White Out, her sister is killed. To get away from the fame and her sister’s memory she runs to a farm in secluded Iowa. Suddenly her life thrown into turmoil again as she discovers that she is the target of a psychopath, who wants nothing more than to be with her, even is she has to die to make it happen. Women begin to disappear and die all around her and there is nothing she can do to stop it. Meanwhile Sheriff Carter is trying to solve the case and save Jenna from the murderer.
I found Deep Freeze to be alright. The plot and storyline were strong and well-developed. It was fairly intriguing, although at times I did get a little bit bored. The beginning kind of grabs your attention and then there is a bit about the case only to drop off for awhile. The ending was unpredictable, which is great to see from an author. I also liked the depth of the main characters, although I would have liked to learn a bit more about the Sheriff. The fact that everyone seemed to have a crush on Jenna Hughes was a little bit too much for me though as it was kind of sickening. Overall though I was kind of expecting a little bit more, maybe it was the fact that her books come so highly recommended. This book seems to be more for a female audience than a male one.

Book Review- Erica Abeel- Conscience Point

Conscience Point is the first Romance book I have ever read. Erica Abeel, the author, sent requested that I review her book and I agreed, willing to give any genre a try. In this novel Madelaine Shaye, or Maddy, has everything going for her, a great career in music and the arts, a loving daughter, and a steamy relationship. Life suddenly comes screeching to a halt though, as one by one things start falling apart. Now Maddy must try to piece her life back together and find the strength within to carry on.
I have to admit that I did not particularly enjoy this novel, but that is not what I rate books on. I rate books on quality of writing, and whether or not people who read the genre in question will like it. Erica has a great writing skill and has a well-written novel here. She has created great pictures of the places within this novel and the characters are very well-crafted. I loved the cover of Conscience Point as it was different from most book covers; as a result it draws the eye to the front cover. Even the dialogue is strongly-crafted and the bantering between characters will be enjoyable for romance lovers. One thing that I did find a little bit lacking however, was the plot. I would have liked to see more development on Maddy’s relationship with her daughter.
I would recommend Conscience Point to people who enjoy romance and gothic novels.

Book Review- R.L. Saunders- Blind Pig

This review is one of those reviews that are done upon request by the author. Blind Pig tells the tale of Alan, a writer waiting for his big break. He stumbles upon a drug deal and his life is suddenly in danger, rather than dying he kills a man who attempts to kill him. Discovering a half-mil in cash, he decides to take the cash. His life will never be the same.
Blind Pig is not the kind of book that would catch your eye just by looking at the cover. The old saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ applies to this book. It lost a quarter-star for the cover being so boring. I would have liked to see something better as a person’s choice of book often does start with the cover, it’s sad but true. The actual plot is very good. It was very creative and enjoyable. I was looking for it to fill out a little bit more however. The characters are well-crafted and in depth enough that you can get to know them quite well, understanding their motivations behind their actions. I may have missed it, but I was looking for the explanation of Alan’s nickname of Blind Pig, which the title obviously comes from. I did find that it digressed a little in the beginning, including a couple of parts that I wasn’t sure how they fit in. The dialogue was fairly good, but could have been a tad bit stronger in my opinion.
Overall I did enjoy reading Blind Pig. R.L. Saunders has a great career ahead of him and I hope that he continues writing. As for a recommendation, this novel is hard to place in any specific genre. You could call it a romance, drama, thriller, or crime novel. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys any of the above listed genres. A great read and I thank the author for the opportunity to read this book.
