God and Me by Lynette Harris Denton: Book Review

 4/5

This book was sent to me by Ambassador International to review. The opinions are completely my own and are not impacted by others.

With a devotional I am having to look at different criteria than I would for a normal work of fiction or nonfiction. One major factor is how much scripture it has and this devotional had a great amount of scripture for each day. Making it Bible based more than opinion based. As for the information that was provided, it was good solid information. Where it fell a bit short, was that with some of the devotions, they were a bit shorter than they could have been, which felt a bit shallow at times. I get that the author was trying to keep each devotion a page long, which is the perfect length for daily reflections, it just some were only half a page long. For the most part though, the author did a nice job of balancing length with scripture. A personal note, that does not impact my review, as it is simply a personal preference, is the guided prayer. I prefer my own prayers over guided prayers. It just seems insincere when someone else tells me what to pray. Again, it's a personal preference.

Overall, I would probably recommend this book to those who want a short daily devotion.

Book Review- Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- No Place to Cry

Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- No Place to Cry: The Hurt and Healing of Sexual Abuse (The Moody Bible Institute 1990) 3.5 Stars

We now see Dorie years after her first book and she is now discussing her sexual abuse, which she did not feel comfortable discussing in the first book. She has been searching for healing and the Lord is providing what she needs. Now she is trying to help others find healing in the same manner.

I found this book particularly hard to read. It was challenging to read about all the abuse she underwent, as well as the abuse others have undergone. It could have been a little better written, but it was truly written from the heart. It is amazing what the Lord has done in her life and how he is using her to help others. It is a very religious book, so if you are not into religious then this may not be good for you. However if you have been abused and are in need of healing this is likely a good read.

Book Review- Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved

Doris Van Stone and Erwin W. Lutzer- Dorie: The Girl Nobody Loved (The Moody Bible Institute 1979) 3 Stars

Dorie’s mother did not want her, as it forced her into an early marriage. The emotional abuse was terrible and she was quickly sent to an orphanage. From there she was sent from one abusive home to another. When a group of Christians held a Bible study at the orphanage, she found the Lord and is now living a life of struggling between forgiveness and bitterness.

I loved the first section of this book. The author pours her heart out onto the pages. The story was captivating and my heart went out to her. I enjoyed seeing how she embraced religion and used it to keep her sanity throughout her trials. Once the first half of the book was over though, it became more about her religious life and it was kind of tedious. I found that it kind of dragged at many sections. I would only recommend this book if you enjoy deeply religious books.
