Book Review- Daniel Silva- The Marching Season

Daniel Silva- The Marching Season (Ballantine Books 2000) 3.25 Stars

Things are heating up in Ireland as peace talks are happening. People are dying and Michael Osbourne has been brought back into the CIA to help deal with the problem. Now he has discovered that his father-in-law, the new American Ambassador in London, is to be assassinated to send a message. This will bring him face-to-face with an old enemy, a man who failed to kill him the first time, and does not plan to miss twice.

The introduction for this book was pretty good. It grabbed my attention and made me want to find out what was going to happen next. The plot was pretty good, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat, but it jumped around from character to character a little too much for my liking. It was kind of distracting and hard to keep up with who was doing what at what time. The characters were pretty good, in depth and well done, however there were a lot of characters to follow. Overall I would say that this book was okay, and I will certainly try other books by this author.

Book Review- Douglas Preston- Tyrannosaur Canyon

Douglas Preston- Tyrannosaur Canyon (Forge Books 2006) 3.75 Stars

When a dinosaur hunter is found dying from bullet wounds in a New Mexico canyon, the veterinarian who found him is given a mysterious book. An ex-CIA monk may be the only way to understand this mystery, which may be leading towards a huge scientific discovery. A man wants this discovery all to himself and will do anything to prevent others from laying claim to it, even if it means murder.

The introduction for this book was great, it grabs the reader’s attention and it doesn’t let go until the end. I loved the plot; it was intense and had some good twists. It was a little weird having the T-Rex perspective at points, I still haven’t decided if I liked those short sections. The characters were great for the most part, but I hated the character of Detective Willard. He seemed a little too incompetent to be a detective and he makes cops look really bad, especially when he digs up a potential crime scene himself and smokes at the same potential crime scene. Then at the end he all of a sudden changes and is competent. This inconsistency kind of tainted the book for me. Overall it was a pretty good read.

Book Review- Allan Folsom- The Day After Tomorrow

Allan Folsom- The Day After Tomorrow (Vision Books 1998) 3.5 Stars

Paul Osborn is visiting Paris and spots his father’s killer in a cafĂ©. After attacking him, he is drawn into a web of lies and deceit. Digging for the truth and hunting down this man to ask for the truth, he finds that he may be getting into more than he can handle. LA detective McVey has been brought in to look into this mysterious group that Osborn has uncovered.

This book took me a really long time to get into. I only kept reading because I like this author, and it was recommended to me. I found it too be very wordy in places and could have been a lot shorter. That being said once you get into this book it really grabs your attention and it is hard to put down. It had some very intense moments and some great twists. The characters were well done and added a fullness and depth to the novel. The ending was kind of a let down; I expected more out of it. Overall I thought the book was a decent read.

Book Review- Louis Sachar- Holes

Louis Sachar- Holes (Scholastic 2000) 3 Stars

Stanley Yelnats has been arrested and sent to Camp Green Lake, but the thing is, he didn’t do the crime. Now he finds himself digging holes for a warden who just wants to get her hands on some rumoured treasure. Digging holes is supposed to build character, but he quickly learns that that is not really what is going on.

I enjoyed this Disney movie, but the book just doesn’t cut it in comparison. I found this book to be a little slow and was looking for something interesting to happen. That being said the characters were very well done, and the storyline was just interesting enough to keep you reading, in the hopes that something big was going to happen. The big climax that it was building up to was decent enough, but I may have been hoping for a bigger pop. Overall I would recommend the movie and not the book.

Book Review- Thomas Greanias- The Promised War

Thomas Greanias- The Promised War (Pocket Star Books 2011) 3.25 Stars

Sam Deker works for Israel’s counterterrorism unit and he has just been captured in a trap. While being tortured for information he manages to escape. Somehow he is taken back in time and is found by the Israelites waiting to invade Jericho. He must now become a spy once again and save the Israelites of the past as well as the future.

The intro was decent, not great, but not bad either. Then the book just gets a little too weird for me, I guess I have never been into the whole time travel thing. I thought that if it was done right I might enjoy it, but in this case I did not. The overall plot was pretty good, but the religion aspect was kind of frustrating. I do not enjoy reading books with a lot of religion in them, especially when the author takes liberties with facts. The characters were good, but again not great. I am used to characters with more depth from this author, but I did not find that in this novel. Overall I just thought that this book was okay.

Book Review- Rick Mofina- A Perfect Grave

Rick Mofina- A Perfect Grave (Pinnacle Books 2007) 3 Stars

Sister Anne has just been murdered and no one can figure out why. Police Detective Grace Garner and reporter Jason Wade are digging into the case. Things just aren’t adding up and when more people start dying they discover that it may have something to do with a secret past. They solve this case before it escalates out of control.

The introduction was pretty good and I was settling in for a good read. However it jumped from person to person and it got to be a little annoying. The basic plot was really good, but I feel that it was executed wrong. The characters were well done and seemed to jump off of every page. The setting was kind of weak at some points, but interesting anyway, especially when it had a chapter in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Overall I thought this book was just okay. It was good, but could have been altered to be better.

Book Review- Brian Haig- Private Sector

Brian Haig- Private Sector (Warner Books 2004) 4.25 Stars

Major Sean Drummond has been sent to a private law firm in a government program that allows JAG lawyers to be placed in a private firm for a year, which is supposed to help them understand more about law. Drummond knew he didn’t want to go, but he had no idea just what kind of trouble he was being sent into. His former girlfriend, the person who was part of the law firm and the exchange program before him, has been murdered. It appears to be a part of a serial killer spree, but is there more of a connection to the firm than first meets the eye?

The first few pages of this book were not the most gripping. I would have liked a better introduction. That being said I love the wit and sarcasm of Sean Drummond, it is very amusing and made me chuckle throughout the book, and I loved his lawyer jokes. The characters were really well done and I enjoyed learning about them. The plot was pretty good as well, with some intense scenes, and a few good twists. The setting was in a few different cities, but the action was still there, and the shift in setting assisted in keeping the book fresh and exciting. This was a pretty good read and I would recommend it to those who enjoy a good thriller.
